Our History
Our beginning
Pelican Credit Union opened its doors in 1956 as the Department of Hospitals Credit Union, serving employees of Louisiana charity hospitals, mental health centers, and state offices. From the beginning, our mission focused on delivering innovative financial products and building lasting member relationships.
Becoming Pelican Credit Union
As our membership grew and diversified, we adopted the name Pelican Credit Union in 1988 to better reflect the broader community we serve across Louisiana.

We are now the largest state-chartered credit union in Louisiana, serving more than 80,000 members nationwide.

Despite our growth, our commitment has never changed. Personal service remains at the heart of everything we do. We continue to strengthen Louisiana communities one member at a time by providing the knowledge and resources needed for a stronger financial future.

Unlike banks, Pelican is not-for-profit and member-owned. When you open a Primary Share account, you become an owner. Any earnings we generate are returned to you in the form of better rates, lower fees, and improved services — not paid to outside shareholders.
Pelican holds both a Low-Income Designation (LID) and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) certification — recognizing our commitment to serving members across all income levels and backgrounds.
